Globally, the month of September is dedicated to creating awareness around Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, a disorder that affects millions of women.

It is estimated that 8 – 13% of women are affected by PCOS, many of whom may not know enough about the disorder to recognize the symptoms, seek medical help, which will assist with diagnosis and secure the help they so desperately need.

However, the emerging South African based company, 3Sixty Biomedicine, in collaboration with renowned medical professionals including the likes of Dr. Sindi Van Zyl and pharmacist Tendai Bbosa, have made it their mission to give women living with PCOS hope for a better tomorrow!

This is where the #BreakTheSilence campaign comes in.

What started during SA Women’s Month as a way to increase conversation and education around women’s health issues, has now grown into a powerful movement where key female role players are giving other women the courage to not be ashamed of conditions affecting their personal health.

"We are proud of the progress made already in women’s month to empower thousands of women to manage these symptoms, and we look forward this month to giving even more PCOS survivors the solutions and freedom they deserve to continue with their lives without letting PCOS hold them back," says 3Sixty Biomedicine CEO, Walter Mbatha.

Within our Salome range our Salome Fertility product is specifically focused on assisting to manage infertility linked to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and is a quality, over-the-counter treatment option. In the next two months we will also be launching another product called Salome Polycos to assist with managing symptoms linked to PCOS."

As women, and health professionals, who have walked this road themselves both Bbosa and Dr. van Zyl have made it their mission to advocate for women’s health issues, in particular in relation to PCOS.

"For me the most important thing around PCOS is getting people diagnosed, and I think that South Africa has to get to a place where we can speak openly about issues like PCOS and obesity, as well as the health issues that come with being obese or overweight. I am delighted to be part of the #BreakTheSilence movement and to help 3Sixty Biomedicine in their efforts to shine a spotlight on this common but often undiagnosed condition," said van Zyl.

Bbosa’s opinion, backed by her knowledge from a pharmaceutical background, echoes van Zyl’s sentiments.

"As a woman who showed symptoms from the age of 16 and was only diagnosed 15 years later, there is not enough knowledge and awareness and many women go undiagnosed for a very long time. Since my diagnosis I have tried multiple treatment options to treat my condition,"she says.

"Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex disease that involves reproductive and metabolic problems. Common symptoms or signs of women suffering from PCOS include menstrual irregularities, skin disorders, and mood disorders such as anxiety and depression."

"I am excited to be part of the #BreakTheSilence movement during PCOS Awareness month and on the 16th of September I will be featured in a free Facebook and Instagram live discussion aimed at educating the public about PCOS. I look forward to sharing my story and expertise with other PCOS survivors to help them better understand what the condition entails and how best to treat it," Bbosa explains.
