EXHIBITION: Women of Stone by Phillipah Rumano on show at the Keyes Art Mile Gallery in Rosebank until 2 May.
A brief overview
Phillipah Rumano, a Zimbabwean native, an International Award-winning/published sculptor by DNA, and a fashion designer, welcomes us into her avant-garde world that celebrates identity, self-expression, the resilience of humans and a sense of natural being using delicate bodily gestures that exude 'femininity' and contrasting facial features. This work of art uses body, feminine bodies to be specific, and juxtaposed facial features to reclaim and redress space as a woman. However, I would like to add 'Black' women because challenges are exacerbated by colour, and I figured that since Rumano is a Black woman, this would resonate with these experiences.
