Jane Fonda is encouraging young people to "stop being afraid about getting old".

The 84-year-old, who was recently announced as the face of H&M's new activewear line, spoke to Vogue about how she has learned to embrace the ageing process.

"What matters isn't age, isn't that chronological number. What matters is your health," the iconic actor said.

Jane added that she wants young people to realise that "just because you're a certain age doesn't mean you have to give up on life."

The star said this is the reason she openly tells people her age. However, she is aware that some may attribute her graceful ageing to having access to a certain lifestyle.

"You have money. You can afford a trainer. You can afford plastic surgery. You can afford facials. You can afford the things that help make you continue to look young. That is true. Money does help. Good genes and a lot of money, as somebody once said.

"But then, as I'm saying that, I'm thinking we all know a lot of women who are wealthy who've had all kinds of facelifts and things like that, and they look terrible."

The star admitted that she had a facelift before but says she stopped because she did not "want to look distorted".

"I'm not proud of the fact that I had [one]," she added.

"Now, I don't know if I had it to do over if I would do it. But I did it. I admit it, and then I just say, okay, you can get addicted. Don't keep doing it."

When it comes to skincare now, Jane said she does not spend a ton of money on face creams or anything of the sort. "But I stay moisturised, I sleep, I move, I stay out of the sun, and I have good friends who make me laugh. Laughter is a good thing too."
