Silikamva High School made history in Hout Bay and serves as a true testimony to overcoming adversity as its matric class of 2023 beamed bright with a stunning 93% record pass rate, compared to a low pass rate of 40% less than five years ago.

“We are so proud of the class of 2023 which achieved a record pass rate of 93,3%, marking a steady increase in the pass rate from 40% in 2019, 62% in 2020, 85% in 2022 and 87% in 2023,” said the school’s matriarch and principal Siphathisiwe Nkala-Nkohla.

Nkala-Nkohla acknowledged how Silikamva’s learners are faced with a lot of socio-economic issues like gangsterism, alcoholism, teenage pregnancy and unemployment, “but despite that, our Class of 2023 overcame them and showed a lot of determination and continued to work hard”.

Much of this success is equally attributed to the dedicated drive showed by the school’s teachers. “They sacrificed a lot of their time to offer morning classes from 07:00, after school lessons, Saturday and Sunday classes with 100% learner attendance,” she beamed proudly.

As a collaboration school, Nkala-Nkohla expressed words of appreciation to the role played by Silikamva’s school operating partner, Common Good. “They render support in terms of coaching, staff development training and financial support for additional staff. This lessens the burden on the Grade 12 teachers.”

Although the school’s top student, Sisipho Thole was unable to collect her results in person, the principal simply had to commend Thole for her sheer dedication.

“Sisipho had been one of the most consistent learners throughout the whole year and we wish her and the rest of the learners all the very best in their future endeavours.”
