Markus Jooste was once the toast of Stellenbosch. He challenged the established order in the Boland, and flaunted his wealth and influence. But the town won’t mourn him, writes Pieter du Toit.  

There was a time when Stellenbosch loved Markus Jooste, the former chief executive of Steinhoff.

He went to school in Pretoria, and studied at the University of Stellenbosch, but true to the Boland town's character, was never quite accepted in its circles. He was an "inkommer", someone who came in from the outside.
