The State has applied for murder-accused Sizwe Ngema, an eThekwini metro police officer who allegedly stabbed his pregnant girlfriend to death on 31 March, to undergo a mental assessment.

A sad-looking Ngema, 27, made his fourth appearance before Magistrate S'celo Zuma in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Monday.

He kept his head down while maintaining a sorrowful facial expression, as prosecutor Calvin Govender briefly addressed Zuma.
