Historians aren't set on the origins of why certain materials have been associated with certain wedding anniversaries but the most widely accepted explanation comes from customs of the Holy Roman Empire.
During this period, husbands gifted their wives with silver wreaths for the 25th year of marriage, and gold wreaths for the 50th.
They were definitely onto something, considering that after decades of marriage, silver and gold are well-earned gifts.
Lesser known though are the milestone years in-between and beyond, as well as their modern equivalents, with the latter list created by the Chicago Public Library.
So, if you need gift inspiration for your next anniversary here are the major marriage milestone years, the traditional gifts associated with each and their updated alternatives.
