A bartender from Mississippi in America has shared a transcript of a touching phone conversation she had with a mother looking for advice after her son had come out as gay.

With 17 years of experience as a bartender, Kara is used to giving advice beyond just recommending drinks – but this call had her stumped!

A few weeks ago while at work she received a call from a woman wanting to know whether Sipps in Gulfport, Mississippi, was a gay bar.

“Well, we’re an everybody bar... but yes, mostly gay,” Kara said she told the mother, who hasn't been named.

Then the mother revealed why she was calling: “What was the one thing you wanted from your parents when you came out? My son just came out to me and I don't want to say anything that may mess him up in the head.”

Kara told her, “Well, I think you should just make sure he knows that you love and accept – wait, do you accept it?” The mother told her that she does.

Kara continued: “You should definitely let him know that you love and accept him! I think everything will be okay from there.”

Kara says in her 17 years of working in gay bars the call was “definitely a first” for her.

“I’ve had a few people that I grew up with ask for advice when they found out their child or child's friend was gay, but never as random as this phone call,” she told the Huffington Post.

She commended the mother for reaching out for advice. Kara's post, in which she shared a transcript of the phone call, has been shared 500 times and has received 3 600 reactions.

Others have praised Kara for what she did.

“Love this post... The fact that the mom sought out advice and the fact that she got the exact right advice!” one person wrote.

“Thank you so much for providing such heartfelt advice to that concerned mother of the young gay man,” someone else added. “Your positive influence on her will undoubtedly help their mother-son relationship to thrive on all levels.”
