Beware of shaken baby syndrome
No matter how frustrated you get, shaking a baby is never an option.
We all get tired, irritable and frustrated at times as we cope with the relentless toll of being a parent. But don’t let one moment of anger lead you to shake your baby or throw it onto a bed. Any shaking or quick motion that makes a baby's head roll or snap back and forth may cause serious injury. It may result in the tearing of blood vessels inside the baby's head and cause brain damage. This can cause seizures, blindness, deafness or permanent brain damage.

How does it happen?
Nobody means to hurt their baby, but it still happens. In most cases of shaken baby syndrome, a frustrated parent or caregiver shakes a baby to make the baby stop crying. It is easy to get frustrated and angry when you are caring for a baby that won't stop crying. You may be feeling tired, alone, or feel like your efforts are not good enough. But never shake a baby to stop crying!

Avoid the danger
  • Always support the baby's head.
  • Don't toss a baby into the air.
  • Learn how to cope with your baby's crying. Many shaking injuries happen when parents or other caregivers are frustrated by a baby’s crying. If you are losing your temper, place the baby safely in his cot and walk away for a few minutes to calm down.
  • Talk to others who care for your baby about how to safely handle your baby. Make sure they understand that it is more important for them to be calm than to stop your baby from crying.
