No babies napping on the couch!
Sudden infant death syndrome is more likely in babies who are left to nap on the couch.

Placing your baby on the couch for a nap is never a good idea. It might look very convenient and cosy but there are some factors that may count against the idea.

Though it seems to be the easier option sometimes, it’s better to take the baby to the bedroom.

According to The Stir, a new study that’s just been published in the November issue of the journal Paediatrics, looked at infants deaths and found that a number of babies die during their naps on the couch.

During the eight years of research, scientists found that 1024 deaths were caused by infants napping on the couch. The likeliness of babies suffocating or being strangled to death was more than babies sleeping elsewhere in the house.

Data from 2004 through to 2012 showed that 12 percent of incidents ending in death occurred in the living room, on the couch. This is one in eight infant sleep-related deaths.

Four causes for these incidents:

- Infants were found to have changed their complete sleep location.
- Infants were found sleeping on their sides.
- Sharing their sleeping space with another person.
- Exposure to prenatal tobacco.

The American Academy of Paediatrics recommends that babies should instead sleep on firm and flat surfaces.

The layout of a couch is completely wrong for an infant, the fluffiness of the cushions, pillows and blankets make it exceptionally difficult for a baby to breathe easily- the curves allow babies to roll into corners that they may not be able to roll back out of.

Has your baby ever taken a nap on the couch?
