Baby breastfed by vegan mom dies
Vegan mother imprisoned after baby dies of vitamin deficiencies.
An autopsy revealed that an exclusively breastfed baby died as a result of massive deficiencies in critical developmental vitamins, leading to the arrest and subsequent jailing of the child’s vegan parents for 5 years, according to the Healthy Home Economist.

The 11-month-old baby girl was found to be lacking in vitamins A and B12, and at her death was only 5.7kg, much less than the 8kg average for babies her age. Her vegan parents were also charged with negligence for not seeking medical attention for the infant, but instead treating her with cabbage and clay poultices and massage treatments after she developed bronchitis.

What's missing?

The case is a tragic reminder that vegan moms wishing to breastfeed their babies exclusively should take supplements in order to ensure their babies acquire a healthy nutritional balance.

Sarah of the HHE comments that traditional cultures, “took great care to ensure that pregnant and breastfeeding mothers consumed ample amounts of animal foods rich in vitamins A, D, E, K and of course B12. These foods included grass-fed butter, pastured eggs, liver, seafood, and fish eggs. Notice that none – NOT ONE of these traditionally sacred foods is plant based!”

Vegan moms are advised to take vitamin B12 supplements as well as true vitamin A supplements. Sarah suggests that “Beta carotene is not true vitamin A nor does it easily convert to adequate amounts of Vitamin A in the body.”

Note: If you aren’t sure if you and your breastfed baby are getting adequate nutritional supplies, do consult a dietician, doctor or pharmacist for advice.
