Wake up your baby’s nose
How your baby knows you first is through her sense of smell.
Like most animals, babies employ their sense of smell to protect themselves. Babies recognise Mom first, initially by her smell and her voice, and Dad later, also by his smell and his voice. That’s why it is often recommended that you use the same perfume for a while until your little one has the ability to recognise you in another way.

If the nose is not doing its job fully, your baby may be oblivious to smells. Waking up your baby’s senses is like adjusting the antenna on your TV. It is about tuning in to receive the signals for producing a crystal clear image.

Help your baby smell

  • For the first few weeks, keep smells the same in as far as possible to create a feeling of familiarity.
  • When taking baby for a stroll in the garden, touch the nose and then bring baby closer to a flower. Keep an eye out for any allergic reactions, or your baby avoiding a certain smell.
  • When cooking and cleaning, give a whiff of the smells but be careful of bringing strong scents too close to the nose. The membrane in the nose is still thin and strong smells
  • can burn it.
  • There are exquisite scratch and smell books, but books, television and computers are second best – always opt for the real thing first. Babies can only learn what they experience, so the more senses are involved in an experience, the greater the quality of the learning.
