Dad's huge peek-a-boo fright
Little girl reacts badly to dad’s surprise peek-a-boo reveal.
Peek-a-boo, the game where you hide your face from a baby and then show yourself again, has been delighting little ones and their parents for generations. In fact, experts agree that it’s not just a game, but a helpful part of childhood development. But sometimes it doesn’t turn out the way you expect.

Take Bradley’s daughter, for example. He took the game one step further. Right in the middle of an amusing round of peek-a-boo he slipped out of the room and shaved off his rather lush beard. His little girl’s reaction to suddenly seeing his shaved face is dramatic…

The video has attracted quite a few criticisms. Some are suggesting that it’s cruel to have put the child through this experience, and even more cruel to have filmed it and put it online. Bradley’s not too fussed, though.

What's the appeal?

Peek-a-boo is particularly meaningful for very small children because they think that when they can’t see you, you aren’t there. So if the child covers her eyes, you disappear. If you cover your eyes, you aren’t there, either.

It’s magic! Dad’s in the room, and then he isn’t. Then he is! Then he isn’t!

It forms a part of how children understand their relationship with the environment around them and the people who inhabit it.

I can remember when my kid’s mom cut her very long hair short for the first time. It wasn’t received well by the kids at all.

On the other hand, the shaving of my head has pre-dated my children, so now when they see old pictures of me with hair they just laugh and laugh. They hated my short-lived beard phase as it was too scratchy for them, so it forced me to choose: Lose the beard or lose the hugs.

It happens more than you think. Some moms opt for shorter hair once they have babies as they lack the time needed to maintain longer hair and also it can get in the way if you’re breastfeeding a baby or changing nappies. Babies also have a knack for grabbing hair and yanking on it… But it can be a bit of a shock for your baby when they see you with short hair for the first time. “Where’s mom gone? Moooooom!”

The good thing about children is that they adapt very quickly. In no time at all they get used to a changed appearance.

Have you ever changed your appearance? How did your small kids react?
