6 top tips for parents of toddlers
Six tips from Mysmartkid.com that address some of the most common mistakes parents of toddlers can make.
1. A toddler has a strong will of their own and they’re going to do their best to assert it. But there are ways to overcome even the most ‘challenging’ toddler. Try turning tasks into fun games. For example, make a bet with them that they can’t put their shirt on before you count to five. Or, give them more chances to make their own decisions, such as choosing between washing their hands OR picking up their toys.

2. Keep in mind that, even though your child is older, they still have a fairly short attention span and won’t play with one toy for very long. That’s why it’s important to always have a variety of toys available and to try and introduce many new activities. Keep a toy box close at hand and make packing up part of the game.

3. Toddlers start becoming independent at this age and they’ll want to start doing things for themselves. So be sure to give them the chance to do just that, even if they make a mess or don’t get it quite right. Brushing their teeth is a good example; let them have a chance to do it themselves and you can ‘re-do’ it until they get the hang of it.

4. You can expect your toddler to be able to concentrate for around ten to fifteen minutes on any one activity. Which means it’s the right time to start choosing slightly ‘longer-lasting’ games and toys for them to play with. Just remember not to distract your toddler while they’re busy with an activity.

5. Even though your toddler is a little older, it’s still difficult for them to understand things that they cannot see. So always keep this in mind whenever you talk or explain something to them.

6. Unlike you, your child won’t be able to ‘multitask’ for quite some time still. In fact, they’ll only really be able to manage one task at time a time, such as talking OR putting on their socks. So rather let your toddler focus on the task at hand and don’t expect them to do too much at once.
