Father's response to school principal's letter of 'unexcused absence'
Have you ever taken your child out of school to attend something you felt was important? Pennsylvanian father, Mike Rossi was left outraged after a school-principal implied that he was an irresponsible parent for pulling his two children out of school to attend his race at the Boston Marathon.

Mike Rossi, a father of nine-year-old twins, Jack and Victoria, responded to a letter sent by the school’s principal with regards to the noted ‘unexcused absence’ of his two children who joined him in Boston to support his race and to pay their respects to victims of terrorist bombings.

Rossi says that he would absolutely take his children out of school again, for something as valuable as the time they spent in Boston where they learnt about history, patriotism, physical education and dedication.

He was left angered by the letter and responded to the school’s principal by mentioning that he felt the children had learned more during their five-day, family outing than they could have in a year of school and described their trip as a “once in a life-time experience”.

Most schools have strict policies to do with taking your children out of school, where valid reasoning and confirmation needs to be given.

However, Rossi says that the children's class-teacher was well aware of the planned trip and that he wouldn't hesitate taking his children out of school again for the same sort of experience.

“While I appreciate your concern for our children’s education, I can promise you they learned as much in the five days we were in Boston as they would in an entire year in school. Our children had a once-in-a-lifetime experience, one that can’t be duplicated in a classroom or read in a book,” Rossi told the principal of the Abington School District

“They also paid tribute to the victims of a senseless act of terrorism and learned that no matter what evil may occur, terrorists can not deter the American spirit. These are things they won’t ever truly learn in the classroom,” Rossi wrote.
