10-year-old swimmer hopes to raise R2 million for Red Cross hospital in the upcoming Freedom Swim

Freezing temperatures, water conditions rivalling the English Channel and great white sharks don’t scare swimming wunderkind Abriella Bredell. 

Not only is she taking on one of the most dangerous open-ocean swims in the country, the Freedom Swim Series, but the young South African from Jeffreys Bay has also pledged to raise an epic R2 million for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. 

Abriella will be the youngest competitor in the event’s history, tackling 7.9 km of the Atlantic Ocean, starting at Robben Island and ending in Blouberg's Big Bay.

The ambitious 10-year-old trains 6 days a week, and has already raised more than R40 000 so far via the crowd funding platform, Backabuddy. 

“This is my first time crowdfunding and I really enjoy it, just knowing that you can save someone's life is awesome,” says the preteen.
