Cycling, tricycling fun!
Cycling is a healthy activity the whole family can enjoy.
Exercising is important for young children who want to grow up big and strong. Cycling has many health benefits and there is no doubt that exercising from a young age will help you stay young and healthy.

“Learning that exercise is important is vital at a young age and often sets the tone for the rest of a child’s life” says Dr Basil Bonner, the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour’s race doctor. “Sport is a great way to keep you healthy and learn about discipline and motivation.”

Exercising gives you a stronger bone and muscle structure, so sport is important for the development of your body. Going for a ride around the block will give you more energy and improve your immune system – meaning your body will be able to fight colds and flu better and you won’t get sick as easily.

Did you know that exercise makes you feel better too? Being active helps some people sleep better and feel happier, and can also improve your concentration levels – good for a long day in the classroom!

Cycling is a great way to get all these benefits and have a fun time with your friends and family! Cycling to school not only gives you a little independence, but teaches you good road habits for later in life. It also isn’t as tough on your joints as running and helps manage your weight too.

If you are already a keen cyclist, make sure that mom and dad have entered you in the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Tricycle and Junior Tour where you can show off your skills and make some cycling buddies!

Andrew Mclean from Cycle Lab has a few tips to remember when you are practising for the big day;
  • Don’t look behind you
If someone shouts your name from behind you or you hear someone fall, the most important thing to remember is not to look behind you. If you are in a big group and you don’t look ahead, you could veer off in a different direction and cause an accident.
  • The more you practise, the better you become
If you practise riding your bike a week or two before the big day, you will be fitter, stronger and ready to take on your chosen route.
  • Have fun
Enjoying your bike ride makes practising and taking part in the event something you will look forward to! Grab some friends or family and ask them to do it with you.

Do you and your kids ever cycle together?
