Gym class does Nae Nae!
This is how to get kids excited about star jumps and push-ups.

Fitness is perhaps not one of the main priorities for the average school kid. Especially if you look at the increasing childhood obesity rate in South Africa.

Some factors contributing to the childhood obesity epidemic are:

• An indoors lifestyle

• Increasing popularity of tablet and cellphone games

• Poor sports programmes and physical ed at schools

• Poor diet

• Lack of awareness about healthy lifestyles

How do we change it?

Certainly we should create awareness about cardiovascular fitness and the health and developmental benefits of exercise, but this sounds kind of boring to a 12-year-old. We need something to get their pulse racing.

USA gym teacher Jared Paschall may have created the game-changer. He came up with a fun aerobic routine for his class at Harvest Elementary School in Alabama to Silento's "Watch me (Whip/Nae Nae)". Not only are his kids clearly loving it, but the video on his YouTube channel has gone viral with millions of views on Facebook. And now other schools are now teaching their classes this routine too!

It's fun and easy to do with your kids at the start of the day to get circulation flowing, kick-start metabolism and just get into a great mood for the day. Watch the video and you'll see:

PS: How cute is the ending?

It may help if you know the (not very intricate) lyrics... click here.

Can your kids do this routine? Send us your story of how you got your children to lose excess weight and become fit again, or innovative things you're doing in the gym class, to or join the discussion on our Facebook page.
