'I was a toy tester for a day'

  • Hi, my name is Oreabetswe and I am eight years old. I was among 200 children who got to test and rate the latest toys before their release.

I was chosen to be a VIP judge for Makro’s first Top Rated by Kids toy experience at Makro Riversands in Fourways.

The event forms part of Makro’s programme to inspire learning through experiential activity.

It was a Saturday morning when my mother told me about the invitation.

I was excited and couldn’t wait for the day to come.

Who wouldn’t be excited to see, touch and rate toys that are not yet released?

The drive to the store seemed endless, I was impatient and kept asking my mother when we would arrive at the location.

Upon reaching the destination, we quickly joined the registration queue where they gave us name tags and briefed us on what the day’s programme looked like.

I then rushed to the photo booth and took a few pictures.

We also indulged in delicious treats, including pancakes, waffles and ice cream.

Then it was time for the fun to begin.

We were ushered to a white, secret toy tent where the latest toys and gadgets were on display; each manufacturer had a special booth, however, the toys were not for sale.

We were then given rating cards to judge each toy. The cards assisted us to think of things such as how cool the toys were and how much fun they were to play with.

My favourite toys were the latest Lego and Xbox; I have no doubt they will make it to the top-10 rated toys.

However, I felt 10 minutes to rate each toy was not enough, especially since we were expected to give a fair rating.

Sadly, we were not allowed to take pictures of the toys inside the secret tent, but that didn’t stop me from having a great time with my baby sister, mummy and daddy.

I was lucky to be part of such a special event!

  • The top-rated toys will be available at Makro stores nationwide and featured in their festive toy guide later this year.
