There’s nothing our kids love more than slime. And they’re all the more thrilled when it’s got a little sparkle... or anything icky and gross.

And with toys still off limits in lockdown, they're probably missing their favourite goo. Here's a simple recipe to make it yourself, with easily available ingredients.

Slime ingredients:

  • 1 cup glue
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • Green food colouring (but monsters come in all shapes, sizes and colours, so you can use whatever you’ve got at home)
  • ¼ cup saline solution, such as contact lens solution (you might need to add a little extra until the mixture comes away from the bowl)

Tips and tricks

  • We recommend using a solvent-free glue, suitable for kids, because they will be playing with it in their hands. You can expect to pay around R40 for 125ml at supermarkets, or go to wholesale stores where you can buy a full litre for about R130. Even some so-called "craft" glues can have very strong smells, so if in doubt, take a sniff before you buy.
  • We recommend using simple baking food colouring and steering clear of dyes that can stain your hands. Also, be sure to use just a drop, for this very same reason.
  • You can also make fluffly slime by adding ½ cup of shaving cream. And even more for a stress ball!
