I have been a fan of Calvin and Hobbes since forever. Never did I imagine that I was reading the story of my son (Conner) and his doe-doe blanket (Lulu).
A very good friend gave Lulu to Conner on the day he was born. At 6 weeks, Lulu was introduced to Conner – and as the saying goes: ‘He never looked back’.
Lulu has been with Conner through every phase of his three years of life. She was there when his Mommy went back to work. She was there holding his hand tightly on his first aeroplane flight. She was waiting for Conner to come home and tell her all after his first day at pre-school. She travels all around the house and garden sitting in the basket in front of his tricycle.
Lulu is present in just about every photo of Conner. Never has a single night gone by that Conner has not held onto Lulu tightly as he drifts off into dreamland. She has just been there. They are inseparable.
My husband and I have furiously searched for a Lulu look-alike. She is looking a bit drab and worse for wear, with a bit of loose stitching. But we have also come to the realization that nothing – not even a carbon copy - could ever replace Lulu. She is Lulu.
And as Conner gets older; and races off on his bicycle, with Lulu in tow – all I can say is ‘Long live Calvin and Hobbes’.
