I agree that lying is bad and wrong and I know I have a double standard here but sometimes kids are two small to handle the truth or maybe sometimes lying actually gets the desired result... Like getting my 3-year-old to pick up her toys/crayons etc. is a mission but she believes me when I tell her that her toys come alive at night and they have feelings and if she doesn't pick them up they will go away...which I pick up and put away for another day to play with.
With my 13 year old I stretch the truth a little bit about smoking and sex and cell phones just so he knows that these dangers do exist.
Tiny white lies work for me.
