Parenting with the constant change of COVID 19 is hard.

There are so many unknowns and it is difficult to plan ahead when you don’t know what the future will hold.

It’s stressful trying to juggle everything the world is throwing at us while guiding our kids through it all too. Parents are struggling and local NGO Arise wants to acknowledge that, and help.

Arise believes that every child deserves to grow up in a thriving family and they’ve gone online to continue to help families thrive during lockdown through their ‘Parenting in a Pandemic’ online event series via Zoom.

Arise is offering five online sessions covering mental health considerations for families to equip parents of preschoolers to teens.

Each of the event topics were chosen by the team as they considered the difficulties that they were facing as parents, and how they are trying to approach their own families.

Each event is just 45 minutes long and tickets cost R20 via Quicket with the extra option to make a donation towards food parcels.

All proceeds from ticket sales and donations go directly towards providing food security for the 60 families linked to Arise.

The events are hosted by Danielle Moosajie, Social Worker with Masters in Social Policy and Management, Alexa Russell-Matthews, Social Worker with Masters in Play Therapy and experience in the corporate and clinical settings and Robyn Jacobs, Clinical Psychologist. Each of these speakers are parents as well as professionals.

The talks for the series include:

• Big Feelings: Understanding your Child's Emotions + Behaviours

Thursday 14 May

We have heard and seen with our own kids, that they are also struggling.  We know that their behaviours are signs of what our kids are feeling.  But as parents we also need to know how to understand our children’s feelings and what they are trying to tell us.  Big Feelings is about finding the language we need as parents to choose how to respond to our kids and to give understanding to their emotional expression.

• Power of Words: When Communicating is Hard

Thursday 28 May

Communicating when we are tired and stressed is hard and it’s easy to say things without thinking of the impact of our words.  But we know that Words can have long lasting effects, especially on our children. This talk takes a closer look at the HOW words affect our children’s beliefs about themselves and how we can change the things we say to our children so that they strengthen our relationship with our child.  This is turn is likely to have a positive effect on their behaviours and self-esteem.

• SAD Youth: Stress, Anxiety & Depression in Children & Teens

Thursday 11 June

Mental health issues are on the rise in youth, even before this pandemic.  This talk seeks to give a brief insight into what stress, anxiety and depression look like in teens and the role parents can play in helping their kids cope.

• Crash Course in Connection

Thursday 25 June

Connection is the foundation of any relationship, but connecting with our kids doesn’t only happen when things are going well. The last talk in the series seeks to unpack what connection can look like when conflict occurs and boundaries are tested.  We believe connection needs to happen as the first step of discipline, but this can be hard to do in the heat of the moment.  So this talk focuses on how to connect first, and how to build trust and belonging to facilitate those teachable moments
