Easter holiday fun for the family

Public schools are nearing the end of their first term. That means the kids will be looking for a way to stay entertained while they're away from school. If you're looking for ideas of family-friendly activities these holidays, we've made a list that will helpfully point you in the right direction. 

Nationwide

Peppa Pig Live in South Africa

Where:

  • 29 March - 2 April: Emperor's Palace, Johannesburg

  • 20-24 April: Playhouse Company, Durban
  • 16-17: State Theatre, Pretoria

Excitement is mounting and fans around the country are counting the sleeps until they see Peppa Pig and George, together with special friends Suzy Sheep, Danny Dog and Pedro Pony, embark on their fantastical adventure when the much-anticipated stage show comes to SA.

KwaZulu-Natal

The Bloom Colour Run and Family Fun Day

  • Where: Sugar Rush Park, Ballito
  • When: 24 March
  • Time: 09:30

The Bloom Colour Run and Family Fun Day is a day of fun for your family, friends or work team.  Join the 5 km walk/run with a splash of colour, stand a chance to win one of many prizes and support our special school. Registration starts at 9:30am. Run starts at 10:30am.

Family Movie Night & Easter Egg Hunt

  • Where: Sugar Rush Park, Durban
  • When: 30 March
  • Time: 16:00
  • Tickets: start from R30 from Webtickets

The evening will start with an Easter Egg Hunt at 17:45 and the movie will begin at 18:30. Please take a blanket, camp chairs, pillows, and flash lights. Make sure the family is dressed warmly as the weather is dropping now. There will be food and snacks sold on the premises since there are no picnic baskets allowed inside.

The Beacon Easter Eggsplorer

  • Where: Durban Botanical Gardens, Durban
  • When: 31 March - 1 April
  • Time: 10:00 - 14:00
  • Tickets: R85 for Eggsplorers and R20 for Observersers from Webtickets

The Beacon Easter Eggsplorer is back! The gardens will be littered with a trail of Easter eggs so older 'eggsplorers' can seek and fill their baskets with eggs. Younger observers will hunt for their eggs in a more closed space. The event is suitable for the whole family and is a great way to enjoy the Easter break. Since the event is taking place at the botanical gardens, why not pack a picnic basket? If you don't want to spend time putting together a basket, you'll have lots of food stalls to pick from. 

The Easter bunny will also make an appearance, so warn the kids to start practising their best smiles and poses for the meet-and-greet.

Gauteng

Rand Show

  • Where: Nasrec, Johannesburg
  • When: 30 March - 8 April
  • Time: 10:00 - 21:00
  • Tickets: start from R20 from Computicket

Tales of Peter Rabit

  • Where: Irene Village Theatre, Pretoria
  • When: 21 April
  • Time: 09:00 - 15:00 (there will be four shows throughout the day, each show lasts for 1 hour and 5 minutes)
  • Tickets: R90 from Computicket

The kids will be entertained with a live show based on Beatrix Potter's classic children novel. The mischievous Peter Rabbit sneaks into Mr McGregor's vegetable garden and finds himself in a very sticky situation. 

Along with the brilliant show, the kids will be entertained by taking part in an Easter egg hunt. 

Katlehong Kids Festival

  • Where: Huntersfield Stadium, Ekurhuleni
  • When: 7-8 April
  • Time: 09:00 - 21:00
  • Tickets: start from R60 from Computicket

Kids can enjoy a funfilled day with rides, stalls and games! There will also be a film screening at nightfall, pack your picnic baskets to enjoy the movie. 

Family Colour Run

  • Where: Weekend Market, Johannesburg
  • When: 31 March
  • Time: 08:00
  • Tickets: kids under 12 pay R50 and adults pay R80 from Computicket

You and your family can enjoy taking part in a 5km colour run with a cash prize for the winner. After the run, enjoy the music, dancing and food available at the Weekend Market.

Disney's Alice in Wonderland Jr

  • Where: People's Theatre, Johannesburg
  • When: 17 March - 29 April
  • Time: 10:30
  • Tickets: R142 from Webtickets

Travel down the rabbit hole and join Alice, one of literature’s most beloved heroines, in her madcap adventures. The ever-curious Alice’s journey begins innocently enough as she chases the White Rabbit. Her adventures become increasingly more strange as she races the Dodo Bird, gets tied up with Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, raps with a bubble-blowing Caterpillar and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game!

Little Maestro - Classical Concerts for Parents & Tots

  • Where: Skoobs, Montecasino, Johannesburg
  • When: 7 April
  • Time: 10:00
  • Tickets: R100 for adults and R20 for children from Quicket

This concert series is aimed specifically at younger listeners. They offer a relaxed environment where little ears learn through Mozart, Bach and well-known nursery rhymes. The recitals are tailor-made with a monthly theme, and includes a lot of interaction and explanation, as well as participation on percussion instruments and moving with the music. Bring your child’s favourite percussion toy, or buy one a Little Maestros approved instrument at the concert!

Western Cape

The Galileo Open Air Cinema 

  • Where: Kelvin Grove
  • When: 01 April

What better way to celebrate Easter Sunday than with a family-fun movie, jumping castles, face painting, balloon artists and, of course, an Easter Egg hunt? The Galileo Open Air Cinema will be holding their annual Easter screening, this year the kids can expect to watch Rise of the Gaurdians. You ticket includes a backrest, blanket, sweet treat, egg hunt and play area!

Tales of Little Grey Rabbit

  • Where: Artscape Theatre Foyer
  • When: 29 March - 9 April
  • Time: 10:30
  • Tickets: R90 from Computicket
A long time ago, in a little house on the edge of a wood, lived a Hare, a Squirel and a Little Grey Rabbit. The Hare was a conceited fellow. The Squirrel was proud, but Little Grey Rabbit was kind and throughtful and took good care of them both. One day a weasel moved into the forest and captured the squirrel and hare. Please join us and help Little Grey Rabbit rescue her friends.

Pinocchio

  • Where: Nassau Theatre Centre, Cape Town
  • When: 2-7 April
  • Time: 09:45

Pinocchio is based on the original Carlo Collodi classic of the little wooden puppet who has to prove himself to be honest and trustworthy before he can become a real live boy, with help and guidance from Jiminy Cricket and the Blue Fairy. Follow Pinocchio and Gepetto on their adventures to Stromboli's Puppet Theatre and inside a whale. Watch Pinocchio's nose grow as he lies to Gepetto and see Jiminy Cricket magically turn into a life-size cricket. A fairytale classic for the whole family.
