The bumpy road to fostering
A single mom tells of the struggle to make her relationship with her child official.
After a number of miscarriages, I decided to adopt. But the obstacles seemed insurmountable, until the happy day when I held my baby in my arms. Now, I wait for the process that will legally place her in my care as a foster child.

The road to court is paved with good intentions.

Sadly it’s almost Christmas and still no sign of the long-awaited foster papers. This means technically my little angel should not even be living with me under the same roof, but they should just try and remove her. She is my child.

Being in a different province - never mind town - makes life very difficult, and it's as if we are forgotten here in the sticks.

The scariest part is when my mother and I paid a visit to the local social services to find out about fostering another little one, the social worker told us that there were NO CHILDREN looking for foster care. If only the world was so ideal.

Meanwhile, the case manager has changed, my file at court has been misplaced, court officials were on strike, and numerous other excuses have led to the delay in getting our papers.

Added to this, little one is showing signs of autism and the tests cost a lot of money, that I do not have. The foster and or disability grant would help get the tests done and set us on the right path to help her. I can’t even apply for the disability grant as she is not officially in my care.

Where does one go when shunted from pillar to post and back again? Does one give up and hand over the little one – NOT on your life! Does one just hold on and hope and pray the New Year brings clarity?

The legal system lets everyone down, and we have to just accept it.

Have you had experience with fostering or adopting? Was it an easy process for you?
