Over the festive season, most of us are keen to relax and have fun with our families before the hectic work (and school) rush starts anew in January.

But let’s face it, money’s tight and with skyrocketing prices we just can’t do everything we used to do to keep the family entertained.

But don’t fret, DRUM found a couple of ways to entertain your entire family without breaking the bank.

1. Beach days!

If you live in a coastal area – or are planning to visit a town or city by the sea – beach days always equal fun days! Make sure to buy lots of sunscreen and take the whole family – including the dog – to the beach, and have a nice picnic while you’re there. And there’s no need to buy fancy food, just take your leftovers, make a few sandwiches and pack some fruit to enjoy on the beach. And don’t forget to take lots of water with you to stay hydrated while having fun in the sun!

Just remember, while many beaches have lifeguards who keep an eye on swimmers, it never hurts to keep an extra eye on the kids.

2. Go bowling

Bowling can be loads of fun, especially if you gather your friends – and even members of your extended family – to play in teams. This is an activity both kids and adults will enjoy and it’s something that will make the hours speed past.

3. Go for a scenic drive

We hardly notice the beautiful scenery that surrounds us when we’re busy throughout the year. So during the summer holidays, when the weather is beautiful and everyone is home, take a drive down a beautiful route (there are so many options to choose from in each of Mzansi’s provinces!). Take pictures with your family and friends – and maybe even stop for a picnic along the way.

4. Catch a free concert in the park

In December in parks across South Africa, there are fun festivities planned almost every day, especially for the kids. And many of them are free, so pack some snacks and fruit and take the entire family. There’s nothing like sitting in the park with your loved ones while enjoying good music and warm summer breezes.

5. Play games with your kids

On lazy days, after preparing lunch with your family, go outside (or stay indoors) and play games like 30 Seconds, Charades or even simple card games like Rummy. Kids often don’t get a chance to just hang out and play with their parents, so take the time to bond with your kids by just spending quality playtime together.
