When I was a teen, I jokingly told everyone my mom might be an angel sent by God to guide and love us. Secretly I thought it kind of could have been true.
I wish that in subsequent years I'd spent more time calling her, or writing to her, or just kept in touch more often. We now live in different provinces and at least have Skype and Whatsapp, which have made communication a bit smoother and more regular. But I miss my mom, I miss sitting next to her with her arm around me, her warm, calm presence.
Today I added reminders on my phone to call her. Regularly, few times a week. Don't judge me: I already have reminders to pick up my kids from school – two different schools, different schedules every day – reminders to put out the recycling on Wednesday mornings, reminders for every work meeting and report due. So really, having a couple of extra reminders nudging me to check in with my mom every other day slots right in with the way my non-multitasking brain is working at the moment.
It's taken me so long, I'm ashamed to say, but hopefully I'm getting there. My mom and dad will always know I love them but now that I'm over 40 I feel I want to remind them of it, like all the time.
I read a great column by Jill O'Rourke on A Plus yesterday and it sparked another idea: I'm going to ask my mom to send me a list of her favourite songs, then make a playlist and listen to them and play them to my girls too. Something we can share even with my mom at a distance.
And lastly, photos. I don't have grandmas any more but my girls have a great-granny on their dad's side, and I'm having each of their photos framed and hung on the wall this weekend so we can celebrate all the moms in our family.
