5 tips for beating the flu before it starts
Attack that sniffle and prevent rather than cure this winter!

Just because winter is approaching, it doesn't mean you should brace yourself to be attacked by the flu virus.

According to Hygizone, an SA company passionate about health and hygiene in the home, vaccines and vitamins should not be viewed as the only measures to protect you and your family this winter.

Research has shown that 80% of infections are spread through direct and indirect exposure.

Direct exposure being inhaling someone else's illness through their coughs, sneezes and post-toilet flushing (yes, that’s right – the germs that escape into the air following a trip to the loo can live for a week on surfaces).

Indirect exposure on the other hand occurs when you touch a germy surface and then touch your eyes, nose, or mouth.

Our first instinct is to dose ourselves with vitamins or ensure that we get a flu jab in time.

Although, non-pharmaceutical methods of protecting you and your loved ones are equally effective, with research showing that people who practice good hygiene get sick less often than those.

Here are a few tips for you to incorporate:

- Cleaning surfaces and objects routinely.
- Preventing moist, humid home environments by keeping the home aerated, such as keeping the bathroom window open.
Improving hygiene habits within the home, such as washing your hands after using the toilet.
- Although it helps to put the toilet seat down, it is well documented that particles still escape, which is why health-conscious families are encouraged to remove germs from the source rather than just attempting to minimize exposure.
- Use single-use tissues for wiping your nose.
