Since Patient 0 was identified in SA, the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases has rapidly increased,to the point where the government has implemented a 21 day lockdown period from Thursday, 26 March, at midnight.

Kids might be confused during this period, because their routine is changing, with no more school or going out to play.

Parents have to try by all means to explain this to them, and at the same time teach them how to avoid being affected.

Here are tips to protect your kids against the virus, while helping them to understand what it going on.

Wash hands

Teach your kids how to wash their hand thoroughly. Use an anti-bacterial soap, and wash hands for at least 20 seconds.

Use antiseptic products that are not harsh on the kid's skin.

Shaking hands

Tell your children not to shake hands or hug when they are greeting.

Teach them fun greetings with their feet, or simply say hello.

Stock up

Do not over buy things you won't need. Even in a national shut down, shops will remain open and supplies will be available.

Take shoes off

Shoes gather lots of bacteria and dirt outside. Teach kids to take off their shoes as soon as they enter the house.

Avoid people

When you are going to the grocery shop, leave the kids behind.

Do not take them anywhere they could be potentially exposed to people sneezing and coughing.

Clean toys

Get into the habit of washing toys before letting them play.

This could be turned to a fun activity and it also cleans their hands if you let them wash the toys themselves.

Take a breather

Being indoors all the time might be frustrating, so play around the yard or on a balcony or in the garden for some time then go inside the house again.
