Top 10 yucky foods
Find out which foods kids won’t touch, no matter what their parents try.
One minute it's your child’s favourite go-to food, the next, it mustn’t even be stored in the same suburb. For some kids, just the smell or appearance of a food item means it will never even be tasted. Occasionally these selective taste buds give in after a couple of years, but some children will never, ever eat certain foods. Find out what our quick poll on Facebook revealed about kid’s most disliked food:

Food kids don't like:
  • Tomatoes. For some reason, these innocuous fruits masquerading as salad seem to get kids shaking their heads and pursing their lips.
  • Fish. Whatever you do, never try a fish and tomato stew. Is it because many kids have a goldfish as a pet that they won’t eat them, or is it the fishy taste?
  • Veg. You can make little faces out of them, cover them with sauce- heck you could probably coat them in chocolate- but many kids won’t be fooled. It looks like a parent-chef’s challenge is getting children to enjoy some kinds of vegetables.
  • Egg. An egg is a strange food to eat. Imagine being a child, and trying to understand the relationship between a chicken and an egg (and where the egg came from). Boiled, fried, scrambled or poached, you may have to find a clever way to get your child to eat eggs.
  • Pumpkin. Great for carving into funny face-lanterns, but difficult to get a child to get used to the taste and texture.
  • Lettuce. Hey, I get this: Lettuce to me is just a damp leaf. A bit like eating a piece of paper. But it’s a summer staple, so it’s worth it to see if a dot of mayo helps your child to try it.
  • Meat. I kid you not. There are kids who won’t eat meat. It can be hard work to do all that chewing (especially when gums may be sore from teething), or perhaps your child objects to eating something “with a face”. If there’s no meat on the table, mom or dad will be trying out some new veggie styles.
  • Potatoes. Mash was the common denominator here, but there are kids who won’t eat chips, either. 
  • We had a tie for avo, spinach, cucumber, baked beans and cabbage. If you want to introduce those to your child’s diet, you’ll need to try some different recipes out to find the right ones.
It could be that your child has a food sensitivity or allergy. If you have concerns that this is the case, do visit a dietician or nutritionist. Also, if your child’s diet is not varied enough, find out what supplements can be taken to provide the missing goodies.
