Serena Williams has opened up about her parental insecurities as she continues to watch 13-month-old daughter Olympia grow up, Daily Mail reports.

Speaking at a Pennsylvania Conference for Women, the 23-time Grand Slam champion said, “I always have these insecurities that I'm not good enough as a mom. We all go through these different emotions that we all don't feel comfortable talking about. But I think we should.”

Following Olympia’s birth, Serena opened up in an article for CNN about how she nearly died while giving birth.

“I almost died after giving birth to my daughter, Olympia,” she wrote.

She also added that her pregnancy had gone smoothly before she encountered problems.

“First my C-section wound popped open due to the intense coughing I endured as a result of the embolism. I returned to surgery, where the doctors found a large hematoma, a swelling of clotted blood, in my abdomen. And then I returned to the operating room for a procedure that prevents clots from traveling to my lungs.”

The younger sister of Venus Williams told Vogue last year about how she was bedridden for six weeks after the birth of Olympia following an emergency caesarean section.

Expanding on the topic at the conference, Serena admitted that she was able to overcome such complications because she was able to afford healthcare, a luxury not available to all women.

“In this country that's supposed to be so technology-advanced, why are we treating our mothers like this? I was really fortunate because I had an opportunity for my voice to be heard. I had a wonderful female doctor who listened to me. There are so many women who were not being listened to. It's really unacceptable.”
