Who doesn't love a bargain?

This is perhaps why the American phenomenon of Black Friday has taken off in South Africa. In recent years more and more local retails have joined the Black Friday express.

While traditionally the day of sales lasts from midnight to midnight, here shoppers are given longer to browse and stock up on essentials as the bigger brands start sales sometimes days ahead of time.

Regardless, there's always a rush and social media is filled with pics and vids of long queues and people getting rowdy as they fight for specials.

This year Black Friday falls on Friday 29 November, and retailers advice shoppers to get up early, wear comfortable shoes, shop in pairs and be prepared to queue.

Some parents prefer to shop online, and inevitably websites crash as thousands click through looking for a bargain or two.

Last year, tired parents spent their Black Friday money on coffee and disposable nappies, but not on discounted vitamins or baby foods.

We've gathered some of the best specials we've seen so you can choose where to best spend your money this Black Friday.

Clicks is keeping their specials hidden until the big day, but have hinted that health products will be on sale, including nebulisers and infrared thermometers, which we all know come in handy when you have little ones in winter.

They're offering exclusive in-store deals, and a weekend of online specials.

Toys R Us & Babies R Us

These retailers have promised discounts of up to 60% off, and although their instore specials will run for just one day, stores will be open from extra early until midnight on the day. There will be online sales for a week around the big day though.

Dis-chem is keeping their specials under wraps, but has promised a multi-day spree so shoppers have more time to bargain hunt, and told Parent24 that "most" of their stock will be on sale.

Pnp has already started offering discounts to online shoppers, and early birds can stock up on cheap nappies, wipes, formula and more already.

Checkers has hired extra staff and will offer bargain hunters extended shopping hours on the day. While what exactly will be on sale is still under wraps, last year saw massive sales of coffee, among other things.

They're also offering a limited number of shoppers the opportunity to pre-order their deals and pick them up before the rush.

A great site for maternity bargains, as they stock Cherry Melon, Cotton On, edit and Superbalist's own maternity and breastfeeding brands, among many others, so well worth a look this month.

A representative told Parent24 that here will be "large discounts" and the sale will start at midnight on Friday. Specials will also be available for five days leading up to the big sale, and we've been assured that early access flash sales on selected days in November will equal those offered on Black Fiday.

Takealot has been offering Black Friday sales in SA since 2012, so they know what they're doing. This online retailer is promising five days of sales, and toys have definitely made the list. What exactly will be on sale is still top secret though.

A representative told Parent24 they can't reveal what will be on sale yet, but that discounts will be similar to their popular Blur Dot sales, and there will be exclusive app-only deals deals for mobile shoppers.

Baby City

Baby City will be hosting Sunshine Friday, they've just told Parent24 to "make your day a little bit brighter with some great specials for your bundle of joy!" Sounds promising.

In the week leading up to Friday the 29th, ToyZone will be hosting a “The Week of Black Friday”. They're promising in-store only specials every day and even crazier specials on Black Friday.

A catalogue is already available online, and check out their daily Deal of the Day for the latest specials.

Prepare to stock up on nappies and toilet paper for potty training, but also see their discounted toddler bikes for a special Christmas surprise.

Makro told Parent24 they'll definitely have great specials on baby items, and that deals will be available online a few days before so shoppers can plan. The sale will run for a week, too.

Before you go nuts and blow your Christmas savings, make sure you really need the items you're eyeing.

If you're stocking up for the year ahead go for non-perishable items, and also check the retailers return policy to be sure you can return any items you realise you don't actually need.

Happy shopping!
