The National Department of Health's child health-focused radio programme, Side-By-Side, is again playing out on SABC radio stations around the country.

The second season explores critical social issues like gender-based violence, alcoholism and HIV.

It also includes an interactive session where listeners will have the opportunity to talk to an ECD expert about their parenting questions and experiences.

"We want our youngest citizens to thrive, not just to survive. Side-by-Side marks a shift in the National Department of Health's approach to Early Childhood Development (ECD)," says Deputy Minister of Health Dr Joe Phaahla who believes that the educational content included in Side-By-Side will prove a supportive resource on the parenting journey for SA's parents.

The campaign covers topics such as breastfeeding, early nutrition, children's right to play, language development, protection from harm, common childhood illnesses, and scenarios where children and their caregivers need extra care and support.

The radio drama follows young mothers Luphumzo, Babalwa, and Joyce and the men and women who help and hinder them as they negotiate pregnancy and parenting – because it takes a village to raise a child.

You can catch Side-By-Side on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays in Sepedi, Xitsonga, Sesotho, isiZulu, Tshivenda, Setswana, Afrikaans, isiXhosa, isiNdebele, and isiSwati on your local radio station.
