Low-cost holiday outings
Don’t stock up on electronic games, take these opportunitiesto get out there with your kids, says this mom of three.
While I was querying my telephone bill earlier this week and standing in the queue for what felt like days, I spotted an ad for ‘The Ultimate Holiday Experience’. The company was offering ‘3 bundles of fun just in time for the holidays’, namely, an Xbox, Playstation or PC gaming bundle.

Now, forgive me for doing a mental double-take, but the holidays they were referring to were now, right? Smack-bang in this gorgeous late summer. And what they’re suggesting we offer our children during their holidays is hours indoors, staring at a screen? Seriously?

We all know our children should be spending time playing outside. It’s common sense. It aids their physical, social and emotional development and it’s just part of growing up.

So if we know this, why are we offering indoor activities when the sun is blazing outside and there’s so much to do out there?

Here are some of the things we got up to during our last holidays, none of which cost much, or any money:

An article in the Huffington Post says that 1 in 10 children who play video games are at risk of becoming pathologically addicted to them. This addiction could bring on depression, social phobia and poor school performance, say the researchers. Sobering stuff, and surely enough to put anyone off encouraging their children to take up gaming as a hobby.

Let’s call a spade a spade. Sticking our kids in front of a television when they’re bored is lazy parenting. I’m as guilty as anyone of doing it. But what I’ve learned holidays is that it takes just a little imagination and a smidgen of effort to get us all off our butts and into the sun.

What’s your plan for the upcoming holidays?
