If technology isn’t making your life better, what is it good for, right? And travel is no exception.

It’s that time when the holidays are calling everyone by name, and if you’re clan is heading for an international destination or just a weekend trip away, we’ve got a list of apps that’ll make the journey as fun and stress-free as possible. 

1.  The Google Maps app

You may be more familiar with using Google Maps for all those times you weren’t sure of a local address, but the app has way more uses than just that. Other than getting directions, you can get details on how much time it’ll take you to travel between locations,  share your location with a friend or family member, get information on traffic congestion and view the destination in Street View. And all these features apply to whereever you find yourself in the world. Pretty snazzy.

2. The YR Weather app

Apps to make travelling with the family easy

Want to know if you should be packing for rain, summer sun or a bit of both? Don’t waste luggage room with unnecessary items and get clued up on your weather forecast in any location with YR Weather. A website as well as an app, YR gives you an hourly forecast for wherever you’re about to journey to.

3. The Sygic Travel Maps Offline & Trip Planner app

Apps to make travelling with the family easy

Organise your sight-seeing itinerary by location with the Sygic Travel app. This app allows you to check out the walking distance between landmarks and is particularly great if you'll be travelling with small children and you're not sure just how much walking will be required.

The app also gives good tips on what makes certain tourist spots worth visiting and clues you in on special offers available to people visiting the area. Another great one for international trips.

4. The Peekaboo Kids app

If you never want to hear the words "are we there yet?" again, then Peekaboo is a must. Perfect for temporarily distracting toddlers during long hours of travel, whether by car or plane. 

The app features a range of animal illustrations and sounds and comes in different variations like Peekaboo Forest and Peekaboo Barn, and even allows to record and include your own voice into the app.

5. Sasol Wildlife for Beginners app

Visiting a game reserve any time soon? Hear's a cool one for families travelling to see some wildlife or have kids who are animal lovers.

The app contain endless info on rare birds or fauna and flora and the 'Big 5', some free and others available as in-app purchases.

Top tip: If you're on a rewards programme, like Sanlam Reality, Discovery Vitality, Momentum Multiply, or eBucks, remember to check the programme for possible discounts and special deals on local flights, car hire and accommodation.
