Who’s your daddy?
Marlon Abrahams explores how we choose a parenting partner.
How do you choose someone to be a father or mother to your children? It’s a complex mixture of outright physical attraction as well as a more subtle observation of underlying genetics.

Apparently a woman’s intuition is far more evolved than a man’s, when it comes to partner selection. When you meet a ‘hotty’ in a bar or wherever and you’re just checking out her curves, she, on the other hand, is assessing your stature, height, skin tone, teeth, intellect and may even introduce the subject of your finance, all as part of her selection process and decision to allow you into her holy of holies later.

This phenomenon is backed up by various studies, research material and expert commentary (all available on the internet). I want to suggest that we male Neanderthals are slowly but surely becoming more aware of it too and more discerning with regards to where we intend planting the seeds of our loins.

It has to be said that this intuitive selection process has stood many a mom in good stead as she strives to ensure her babies have what it takes to survive. I think though, that the time is fast approaching that we men are becoming more aware of it as well: We’d also like to know how to choose good potential moms for our children.

Yet we’ll probably agree that many men are still just looking for a good roll in the hay. Though, according to respected author of Raising Sons, Stephen Biddulph, “the global society has never had men being more actively involved in raising their kids as they are now.” Which is why I think the trend of male awareness in partner selection is not as far-fetched as we might think.

Truth be told, the last thought on my mind was the transference of genes during the construction of my three little angels. But Lady Luck appeared to be smiling on me at the time since the overriding quality my kids’ moms possess is an iron-strength of character. These ladies are strong, independent, focused individuals who I believe have passed on those qualities to my daughters. I don’t think it’s any surprise either that my own mother fits their description either.
