Here's how to calculate your body mass index (BMI) and reach a healthy weight to increase your chances of falling pregnant.

## How do I calculate my BMI?

Calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI) in these easy steps:

1. Take your height (metres) and multiply it by itself to get your height squared. For instance, 1.7x1.7 = 2.89
2. Take your weight (kg) and divide it by your height squared. Eg: 62/2.89 = 21.4
3. The total is your BMI.

## What should my BMI be?

• A healthy BMI falls in the 18.5 to 24.9 range. This is the optimum weight for general health and good fertility.
• If you're under 18.5, you're considered underweight and may have difficulty conceiving - and your periods may even stop altogether.
• If your BMI is 25 or higher, you're considered overweight. This could negatively impact your ability to fall pregnant, and have consequences on your health, from extra strain on your heart and lungs to diseases like diabetes.

## What's the best way to reach a healthy BMI?

Out > In: You have to burn more calories than you consume every day.

So even if you stop eating cupcakes every day, if you're not active and exercise for at least half hour 3 times a weak, you may stop piling on the weight but you still won't lose kilos. Out = In

Conversely, if you start exercising vigorously but regularly eat chips and drink gassy colddrinks, you won't lost weight. Out = In

Eat a well-balanced, healthy 3 meals a day, cutting out fatty foods, extra sugar, full-fat dairy products and lots of processed carbs (white bread, biscuits, etc). Also cut down on caffeine, alcohol and sugary fizzy drinks and drink lots of water (only tiny amounts of fruit juice).

Get moving: take the stairs, don't park right in front of the shop entrance (it's okay to walk!), dance to music, go for walks... just get active again until you break a sweat. Building muscles further helps to burn extra calories even when you're not active.

So eat better, get active, and you'll steadily shed the extra weight and become healthy.
