What is it?
A red, itching eye can be caused by a number of different things, from a virus or bacterial infection to allergies or a foreign body stuck in it. There might be pus or a constant stream of tears from the affected eye.

What to do

This is most often caused by something your child caught at school, so don’t send him back until it’s cleared up. Go to the doctor for the right ointment or drops for the cause, and to check that there is nothing in the eye. Avoid spreading the infection by not wiping the infected eye with a face cloth that is then used on the rest of the face.
