Hives

Raised, often itchy, red welts on the surface of the skin.

Symptoms:

  • An intensely itchy, raised rash also known as urticaria or nettle rash.
  • It could be in just one area or widespread, and is usually an allergic reaction to something.

Seriousness:

  • It is serious if it is accompanied by other symptoms of anaphylactic shock like swelling of the mouth or lips, noisy breathing, difficulty swallowing or drowsiness.
  • In this case you must take your child to the hospital immediately.
  • Ask the pharmacist for advice in mild cases.

Treatment:

  • If you have identified the cause, help your child avoid the allergen.
  • During an attack you may give your child antihistamine recommended by your doctor or pharmacist.
