Rotavirus (causing gastroenteritis)

Severe acute gastroenteritis with diarrhoea and vomiting.

Symptoms:

  • Prolonged diarrhoea and vomiting are the main symptoms, together with loss of appetite, tummy ache, lack of energy, fever.

Seriousness:

  • If your baby is under 6 months, take her to the doctor immediately. 
  • Otherwise treat at home, unless your child still has symptoms after 24 hours.

Treatment:

  • Let your child take frequent sips of water and rehydration solution (bought at the pharmacy).
  • Dehydration is a serious side effect of rotavirus.
