Umalusi has officially put its stamp of approval on the 2019 NSC examination results.
"Umalusi has noted that there were some administrative errors during the writing of the examinations, but there were no systemic irregularities, and for that reason, Umalusi is happy to approve the release of the results," Professor John Volmink Umalusi Chairperson said while addressing the press.
The announcement was supplemented with a press statement in which the quality council revealed an "improvement in learner performance in subjects such as Geography, Physical Science and Mathematical Literacy."
"The highest matric pass"
Although nothing has been confirmed by the Department of Basic Education, an insider says the country can expect to see an unprecedented improvement in the matric pass rate.
"The department is going to announce the highest matric pass rate. The system is on the rise," the source told City Press.
Basing her opinion on the fact that the NSC pass rate has steadily grown by upwards of 1.6% since 2008, former MEC of education Professor Mary Metcalfe says she believes we can realistically expect to see an 80% matric pass rate.
"The national pass rate for the National Senior Certificate has been steadily improving over the past 10 years from 62.6% in 2008 to 78.2% in 2018. This is an average increase of 1.6% a year... There's no reason to expect a marked change from that pattern."

Success by province
And while Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga will announce the overall national academic performance of the class of 2019 on Tuesday 7 January, a few officials could not wait to share how their province fared.
An unnamed member of the Free State Department of Education said his province should be named "the best-performing province."
"I won't give you details now, but I can tell you that we're the best-performing province, followed by Gauteng, North West and the Western Cape."
According to one Eastern Cape Department of Education official, her province is "on the other side of 75%, up from 70.6% in 2018."
The best medicine
Confident officials aside, anxious matriculants have taken to Twitter to share how they're dealing with the run-up to results announcement day, and thankfully they've not lost their sense of humour in the waiting process.
