Home schooling is an alternative to attending public or independent schools. With homeschooling a parent of a learner of compulsory school going age provides education for his/her own child/ren at home.

As a homeschooling family, you can either teach your child yourself or hire a tutor to do the teaching at your home.

If you have decided to teach your child at home, whether for the rest of this year or for the rest of your child's school career, you must apply to the head of your provincial education department to register your child for home schooling.

The lessons you offer your child must fall within the scope of the following compulsory phases of education:

  • the foundation phase (grades 1 - 3)
  • the intermediate phase (grades 4 - 6)
  • the senior phase (grades 7 - 9)

Find out more about this part of the process here.

Many parents choose to sign up with an accredited home education institution which supplies a curriculum and learning materials. Here are several local options to choose from:

Please note that this is for information purposes only and Parent24 does not endorse any of these institutions and organisations. Please research homeschooling well and talk to other homeschooling parents before choosing a curriculum.

Pure Life Home Education Academy

The Pure Life Home Education Academy offers a digitised homeschooling system that can be customised to your child's learning needs.

All subjects are divided into a series of courses, which includes lessons, quizzes, tests and exams, and is mastery-based. This means pupils have to master the work before going on to next courses, with the required pass rate set at 80% for lessons and 70% for quizzes and tests.

Pure Life's learning material is based on an accredited international curriculum which gives students an American High School Diploma equivalent to NQF level 4. It is also accredited with the South African Qualifications Authority.

Pupils have the option of writing a Cambridge Checkpoint Examination or an exam set by the Successful Online School at the end of each course.
