South African basic education has been under scrutiny by many parents and experts. One of our readers shares her opinion on the proposed system for 2017.
It's been reported that the department of basic education would like to implement a system where pupils complete technical qualifications.
Wendy Schmidt said: "I think it is a wonderful idea, seeing that all the skills programmes have been closed down by most of the FET colleges. Programmes such as hairdressing, beauty technology (cosmetology), clothing production, hotel school and early childhood development. Learners can only obtain these qualifications at private schools and the less privileged learners are deprived, even if they have the ability to obtain a qualification. Private beauty schools are too expensive, not all learners can afford these costs."
