While Easter may mean eating Easter eggs to your heart’s content and delving in pickled fish as well as hot-cross buns for some, for others it also means going home to visit distant family.

DRUM spoke to three local families to find out what their Easter traditions were for the long weekend ahead.

Nosakhiwo Nontwana is a 49-year-old mother of four who has been married for 30 years. She told us that much of her Easter is spent attending church services to celebrate the son of God.

“After work I will head straight to church to attend the late service, which will end at 10pm, says Nosakhiwo, who also went on to explain the importance of going to church on Good Friday.

“Jesus was crucified on this day, so it’s a tradition that’s been passed down from one generation to the next to attend a morning service,” she says.

“We leave the house at 8.30am sharp on the Friday morning because I want to get a front-row seat at the church service, which convenes at 10am. After the service my husband and I, along with our four children, head home to prepare lunch.”

Although many families enjoy the tradition of pickle fish, Nosakhiwo explains that her family doesn’t really like fish.

“My children don’t like fish so I don’t bother buying it, instead we have a full-course meal but on a Friday,” she says joyfully.

While Nosakhiwo attends church on both days of the Easter weekend, things are a little different in the Abrahams household.

We spoke to Portia Abrahams who’s been married for three years and has a 2-year-old son. Portia told us a bit more about how she’ll be celebrating this holiday as well as which traditions she’ll be passing down.

“Traditionally on a Friday we’re meant to have pickled fish, but my husband isn’t much of a fan neither is my son,” explains Portia, adding “I cannot make pickled fish, to be honest,” she confesses with a laugh.

“We visit my mother as well as my in-laws. On the Sunday we gather as the family to really enjoy a big lunch from your chicken to tantalising your palette with something sweet – we’ve got it all.”

Portia also says that this year the family would be adding a bit of a twist to their festivities by playing a pop-quiz game. “The questions will vary from movies to geography, but we’ll definitely include a little bit of bible history just so the game remains relevant.”

Easter Monday is for bringing joy to her little boy, “I’ll hide Easter eggs around the house for him for the classic ‘Easter-bunny-was-here’ spirit,” she says.

“But to be honest, this entire weekend is about demonstrating the significance of spending time with your family.”

Bonita Lucas on the other hand ensures everything is pickled fish galore. “We’ll be having pickle fish from today and probably for breakfast on Friday morning,” Bonita says jokingly. “But my husband doesn’t like pickled fish so I make him a separate seafood paella.”

“On Friday it’s hot-cross buns and attending church. My mother and niece join us during this time so the entire family goes to church,” the mom of two says.

“After church we have a grand lunch, which I dedicate my Thursday night to preparing.” From delicious spicy curry to creamy lasagna, Bonita holds nothing back at achieving the ultimate Easter lunch for her family.

“Mondays are really for unwinding and relaxing with family, we do have an Easter hunt – but in the end it’s always about bringing family together.”
