A case of potential child abuse is being investigated by police in Haskins, Ohio in the United States, after a father had his daughter’s long hair cut short as punishment for getting highlights.
Christin Johnson took to Facebook to share her story, explaining she’d paid for her daughter, Kelsey, to get highlights for her birthday. Christin had dropped Kelsey off with her father and when she came home a few days later her long locks had been cut off.
The post has been shared more than 25 000 times.
Many social media users have lambasted the man’s actions.
Others have posted positive messages for Kelsey, who recently received a wig which her mother says has made her feel more like herself.
According to Fox 8 News, the father and stepmother, who both work as firefighters, have been placed on leave pending investigations.
“I’ve been doing this since ’92 and I’ve never had a case like this,” says Colby Carroll, Haskins Police Chief. “The mom was upset with how her child was being cared, for lack of better terms.”
