A small town in the US came to a standstill when it threw an 11-year-old battling stage-four cancer a prom of a lifetime.

And to top it all off, she was crowned prom queen.

Madison "Maddie" Smallwood hasn’t reached her teens yet but has been battling cancer for most of her life in Monroe, Ohio.

When she was just eight years old, Maddie was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of cancer that starts in the bones.

"She has undergone major leg surgery, four lung surgeries, and then she's done 30 rounds of chemo and 23 rounds of radiation," her mom, Lori Smallwood, told Fox19.

In March her daughter also had to undergo major facial surgery, according to the Team Madison Facebook page.

Sadly, the tumour that was removed has returned and doctors have informed the family that it’s inoperable.

While they don’t know what the future holds for their little princess, the family is making the most of their time with Maddie.

She’s compiled a bucket list of things she desired and her loved ones have done all they can to make her wishes come true.

She now has a driver’s licence, got to drive a Corvette sports car and recently graduated from high school.

And her biggest dream came true when the Monroe community hosted a "Maddie Smallwood's Fifth Grade Prom”.

The event was everything she wished for, boasting a DJ, photographers, great food including dessert and even a pink limousine.

According to Metro, four boys were lined up to be Maddie’s date.

“I haven’t seen Madison smiling in the last three years like she has (tonight) with having her promposals and actually having this prom,” her mom said.

Lori said she was moved by the community’s support and donations.

Maddie still has more she hopes to accomplish, including going on a beach holiday and wearing her mother’s wedding dress.
