‘I felt like I was not a good mom’ – Serena Williams on postpartum

The 23-time grand slam champion, revealed in a lengthy Instagram post how she was still struggling with postpartum emotions. 

In the post, the 36-year-old mother of 11-month-old Olympia Alexis, expressed how she was in a ‘funk’ for the past week and was still trying to learn how to deal with postpartum emotions. 

“I read several articles that said postpartum emotions can last up to 3 years if not dealt with. I like communication best,” she captioned a picture of herself standing on a cliff. 

“Talking things through with my mom, my sisters, my friends let me know that my feelings are totally normal.”

Serena who had recently pulled out of the Rogers Cup due to ‘personal issues’, went on to explain how it was normal for mothers to feel like they weren’t doing enough for their babies. 

“It’s totally normal to feel like I’m not doing enough for my baby. We have all been there. I work a lot, I train, and I’m trying to be the best athlete I can be,” she wrote.

The athlete ended the quote with words of inspiration for mothers who found themselves facing struggles of motherhood, 

“Whether stay-at-home or working, finding that balance with kids is a true art. You are the true heroes… I’m here to say: if you are having a rough day or week--its ok--I am, too!!!” Serena concluded in the lengthy post. 

According to WebMD, postpartum depression affects 1 in 8 women during the first few months after giving birth however 30% of women report that they are still depressed for up to three years after giving birth.
