The Department of Basic Education has announced that this year, due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) it will lose nine schooling days.

This decision was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his address on Sunday evening, where he said no more than 100 people should gather at once and schools were highlighted as one of the high-risk areas.

The Department of Basic Education then issued a statement that read, “All the school based and non-school based activities that require a gathering of more than 100 learners will be either scaled down, suspended or postponed until further notice.”

Johannesburg-based mother-of-three, Zenoyise John says her young children will go to her village in the Eastern Cape because she can’t not go to work.

“I will take them to their grandfather because he is not working, and they enjoy each other’s company. I will drive them to avoid taking public transport,” she told Move!.

Right now, they’ve not been to school and they are home under the watchful eye of her husband.

“My kids are not much of a problem because they like to play games and eat, so they’re happy,” she added.

“All provincial departments, districts and schools must put in place a recovery programme that will ensure that the lost teaching, learning and assessment time is recovered in all schools across all grades,” the department said.
