With schools around the world closed, many children are stuck at home but they can now spend their Mondays reading with former US first lady Michelle Obama.

In an Instagram post she revealed she’ll be hosting a reading series for kids called Mondays With Michelle. Michelle also revealed that she has partnered with PBS Kids and Penguin Random House for the initiative which will go out live on Mondays at 12pm ET (6pm in South Africa).

“As a young parent, I found so much joy in rediscovering my favorite children’s books with my daughters. The time I spent reading with them, creating voices for our favorite characters and beaming with pride as they started to recognize words and read along, is something we all still cherish to this day,” she wrote.

In a press statement, Michelle also said that she was looking forward to giving parents who were stuck at home a break from reading to their children.

“At this time when so many families are under so much stress, I’m excited to give kids a chance to practice their reading and hear some wonderful stories (and to give parents and caretakers a much-needed break),” she said.

Mondays With Michelle kicked off on the 20 April and will continue until 11 May 2020. It will see Michelle read some of her favourite children’s picture books. She started it off with a reading of The Gruffalo written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Alex Scheffler.
