An adorable little girl got the chance to “marry” the love of her life right before undergoing open-heart surgery.

Five-year-old Sophia Chiappalone from Connecticut, US, was born with a genetic heart defect and has been in and out of hospital her entire life.

According to WFLA, doctors didn’t think the little girl would live past the age of two, but Sofia has continued to defy the odds.

Specialists think that the little girl has DiGeorge syndrome – a disorder caused when a small part of the chromosome is missing, according to Mayo Clinic.

“She was born with half of a heart. The whole right side of her heart was missing,” says her mom, Kristy Somerset-Chiappalone.

“She's a walking miracle. There’s no life expectancy at this time because there’s no [medical] reason for her to be alive.”

Before undergoing her third open-heart surgery, adorable Sofia told her mom that she really wanted to marry her preschool “boyfriend”, Hunter Lafferiere.

Excited to make her daughter’s wish come true, Kristy quickly arranged a photoshoot.

“That’s all she wanted in the world – to marry the love of her life,” she says.

Hunter’s mom, Tracy Laferriere, relayed the message to her son, and the little boy was more than willing to make Sophia’s wish come true.

“He’d do anything to make her happy,” Tracy told Cosmopolitan.

“She always agrees to play [computer game Super] Mario [Bros.] with him, so I think he’d happily marry her. They have a chemistry that’s magnetic – it’s adorable to watch.”

Sophia donned a princess-like white dress with a matching veil and carried a beautiful bouquet of flowers, while Hunter wore a cute little yellow shirt and black pants and beamed his way through the shoot.

“I teared up watching her get all dressed up. I was terrified once again, like so many other milestones and events, that this may be the only time I see my baby in a wedding dress, that her miracles and time would run out before that day,” Kristy says.

The proud mom hopes to see little Sophia get married to Hunter – legally this time – when she’s 25.

“My hope for the future is that Sophia stays happy and healthy as long as her body can handle it,” Kristy says.

“You know they say marry your best friend – it just doesn’t usually happen before first grade!”
